The Steel Can: America's Most Recycled Package
Steel Can Recycling Facts:
Steel cans are the most efficient, convenient, and nutritional food delivery system.
Steel cans are completely and endlessly recyclable, without loss of durability or strength.
Every minute, approximately 20,000 steel cans are recycled in the United States.
In 2005, the steel recycling rate reached 63%, with the industry remelting more than 18 billion steel cans into new products.
All steel products contain a minimum of 25% recycled content.
Using recycled steel to make new steel saves energy. The steel industry saves enough energy in one year to electrically power 18 million homes for one year.
The amount of steel recovered through recycled packaging in 2005 (more than 1.4 million tons) would yield enough steel to build 185,000 steel framed homes, or as many homes as there are in the entire state of Wyoming.
Recycling steel saves energy, conserves natural resources, and reduces landfill waste.
How to recycle empty food cans, simply:
- Empty the steel cans
- Place containers in your curbside recycling bin or take them to your local recycling center.
- Complete the recycling loop by buying products made with recycled steel.
